Ironsworn Session 14: Another Journey Begins

Valryc leaves the council chambers, head swimming from the excitement and trepidation that comes with such a serious task. The chance to finish what he started fills him with a desire to set off, yet this may keep him from Wrennsfall for even longer than his last mission. It may be that he never returns from this mission at all… Valryc shakes his head, pushing those thoughts from his mind as he makes his way back home. He feels confident that the council will take care of things for him while he is away. He can’t recall the last time someone has been tasked with such an important mission. The fate of Wrennsfall and all of the Ironlands could rest upon his shoulders. At least until he made it to Timbermount. But still, being trusted with such an important mission made him feel like the council must trust him a great deal.

Forge a Bond- Valryc has been tasked with a great mission by the council. They have laid their trust in him and he has done the same. He knows that the council has a great deal of respect for him to trust that he will complete this mission.

Valryc brims with pride that overcomes his trepidation of the danger of the task ahead. This feeling washes over him as he continues toward his home to begin preparations. A quick stop by Kyara’s house was in order though. “She’ll be wondering why I never showed up today. I’m sure she has an inkling of a suspicion that I’ve been assigned a new mission. I hope she understands why I’ll be away for so long.” His feet bring him to his sister’s house. The chimney bellows thick smoke from the heating of the bread ovens. He hesitates a moment before knocking sharply on the door. His sister answers the door, her face covered in a dusting of flour as she quickly wipes her hands on her apron. “Brother…” She says, a lilt of sadness in her voice and an expression of pleading in her eyes. Valryc simply nods his head. This was always the hardest part. “The council finally sent word this morning. An urgent summons to discuss my next task. I leave tomorrow morning.” Valryc sighs heavily before continuing on. “This might be a long one Kyara. I’ll likely be gone for months. Half a year even. You’ll have to take care of yourself while I’m gone.” He trails off as he sees the shock on Kyara’s face. She collects herself before placing a flour dusted hand on her brother’s shoulder. “Don’t you worry about me Valryc. You’re the one who’ll need to be taking care. No matter how long you’re gone, you just have to make sure that you make it back home.”  She hugs her brother tightly before he turns towards home. With the hard part out of the way, he begins running through checklists in his head of things he’ll need for such a long journey. After returning home and gathering his things, he has a last meal with Kyara before leaving. A final pint of ale with his wrennsgaurd friends in the evening, though he warns them he has an early start in the morning. It will only be one pint tonight and then he’s off. He says his farewells in the evening and turns in to rest early.

In the morning he awakens with the first early rays of the sun beginning to shine into Wrennsfall. He rises and gathers his things. A sharp whistle at the door alerts Strieg that they are on their way. He makes his way towards the city gates as the hawk bursts forth from the open perch in the eaves of the house and begins ascending into the sky, making wide arcing paths overhead. Coming to the gate, his mood sours slightly as he sees what can only be the caravan he is  supposed to be traveling with. A small wagon pulled by a short squat mule sits loaded with supplies, two young wrennsguard and a sharply dressed diplomatic figure seem to await his approach. The men all wear fresh traveller’s boots and cloaks. All appeared to be about three to four years Valryc’s junior.  “I should have told them I’ll travel alone,” he thinks to himself with a frown. “These green soldiers and an envoy are only going to slow me down. I need speed to make it to the first temple before the Shadiri do. I Should have turned down the accompaniment from the council, but in the moment I didn’t think about the possibility that they would send me with anyone other than experienced scouts…”  His anxiety builds but it’s too late. One of the soldiers salutes Valryc as he sees the captain approaching. The other soldier and envoy notice him right away and make similar salutes though the envoy’s movements are stilted and rather awkward. It's obvious he has not done such salutes many times, but feels it necessary as the scout captain approaches. The envoy awkwardly lowers his hand before stepping forward and making a short bow, a movement that the man is obviously more comfortable with.

Names of our companions:
Soldier 1 (34-Ironlander names): Deshi
Soldier 2 (84-Ironlander names): Glain
Envoy (96-Other names): Aleko

“Greetings Captain Valryc. We have been selected by the council as your traveling companions. Let me introduce our guards, Deshi and Glain. And I am Ambassador Aleko. Before we begin, the council has given me some instructions to pass along to you to maintain the, uh, secrecy of your purpose in traveling with us. Hmmm, lets see…” Aleko mutters softly to himself as he begins searching his pockets. Finally he pulls out an envelope sealed in wax with the council’s mark. Valryc takes the envelope, breaking the seal and reading the note over.

Captain Valryc,

I know you may be thinking you’d travel faster alone than with these men. Do not be fooled by their appearances though. All three of them have made the journey to Timbermount and Windrest more times than they can count. You may be a scout, but these men have experience traveling the lands between Wrennsfall and our sister cities. Use their knowledge to your aid as best you can. Beyond the route, these men are completely unaware of the mission that has been set before you. I leave the choice to inform them up to you. Tell them as much or as little as you need in order to complete your mission. They only know that you will depart the caravan before arriving at Timbermount and that they are to camp outside of the town until you are able to meet them.

Aleko is also a well established ambassador of Wrennsfall. He will be able to quickly set meetings with the other councils. Without him you’ll have an impossible task trying to set such meetings on your own. We hold you in high esteem here, but other councils will likely care little to meet with a captain of the Wrennsguard.

Best of luck to you Captain.

Valryc reads the note over a second time before letting out a light sigh. “Very well. It appears that you’ll be of use to me yet, though I am hesitant of our speed. We’ll need to make some ground rules here before we set off. We’ll be traveling fast and hard. We’ll be on our way with the early morning and we won’t make camp until the sun has set. Haste is the most important goal we have for this journey. If you don’t believe that you can hold up to these requirements then please excuse yourself and hopefully the council may find me suitable replacements.” Valryc is almost taken aback himself at his curt tone, but he knows that these men must understand his expectations of them before they depart.

Aleko stiffens with a look of indignation on his face for just a moment before he collects himself and calmly responds. “Captain, I’ll have you know that my men here and myself have made this journey several dozen times. It is a long and hard road, but we know it well. Without us in your accompaniment you’ll likely find yourself lost and delayed more than you’d be if you would just trust in our abilities. The importance of your mission has been conveyed to us. We, all three of us, have volunteered to aid you. You shall not find any hesitance in following your orders among us, I promise you this.” Deshi and Glain nod in silent agreement with Aleko. The men may seem green, but it is obvious that they are determined.

Valryc again lets out a small sigh, “Very well then. I’m sorry to question your understanding of the task at hand. I know there have been little details shared with you. I only wish to convey the seriousness of the mission. We have no room for error or delay. For now that is all I will say, but as needed I shall reveal our goal further. But with the introductions and our understanding of each other out of the way, by all means, let us be on our way. The light is wasting with each breath we delay.” Valryc nods, placing his pack onto the wagon before setting off down the road out of Wrennsfall and on to the long road ahead.

Undertake a Journey- Valryc and his caravan begin their long trek to Timbermount. Valryc plans to depart the group before they arrive at the city and hopefully claim a piece of the sword before the Shadiri are aware that they are chasing the same goal. The long journey is eased by the cart and Valryc’s companions' knowledge of the road to Timbermount. The journey will still be formidable (1 progress per waypoint)

The first day of their journey is more successful than Valryc expected. Though the cart made them stay on the road, it was much easier to trek the entire day without the weight of his pack weighing him down. His companions were solemn and purposeful, speaking little and staying vigilant for dangers along the road. “Maybe I was too harsh on these men. They obviously know what they're doing and their experience of the road south will be invaluable” Valryc thought to himself as they continued moving along the road. Deshi spoke up, breaking the silence. “There is a village on the outskirts of Wrennsfall territory. That is where we shall end the journey this evening. We will not need to make camp as there is a rather well used inn in the village. They always have a place for us to sleep, even if it's just the loft of the barn. Still better than finding a flat patch of earth. This is our usual stop on our first leg of the journey. I’m sure it will be enough mileage for the day to satisfy you, Captain.”

Valryc nods in acknowledgement of Deshi, “Fair enough… I shall see if we can make some more distance once we arrive at this village. Though I don’t agree with that last sentiment. Finding a nice patch of earth can be just as comfortable as a nice feather bed, if you know how to find the nicest patch.” Valryc chuckles to himself as Deshi smiles at the captain. “It seems like we may travel in style then on this journey, if we have an expert in finding the comfiest patches of earth. I look forward to learning your ways Captain.” Deshi responds. “Though I’m sure you’ll be happy with our progress for the day. We likely won’t make it there before well into the evening. Since the road between Wrennsfall and the village is so well traveled it is quite safe to move well past when you would usually make camp.” Valryc nods thoughtfully. “And what is this town called? Does it have a name, or is it just the last inn on the road south?”

Oracle: (Settlement name-35) Woodhaven

“Woodhaven is the villages name. Quite simply, it is the last haven of civilization before we delve into the dense woods between Wrennsfall and Timbermount. A simple name, but its aptly named in my opinion. I’m sure you’ll find it to your liking. Especially on the return journey.”

Valryc grimaces slightly at the last statement, thinking about the return journey. “They do not yet know that we shall not be returning the way we came… I’ll need to inform them of our full mission sooner rather than later. It feels wrong keeping them in the dark” Valryc thinks to himself. He covers his concerns with a smile and a nod to Deshi. “Very well, I shall look forward to our evening in Woodhaven! The last home before the dangerous forests. I enjoy the sentiment.”

The rest of the day’s travel goes by smoothly. The mule pulls the cart loaded with their supplies much quicker than Valryc had expected. Deshi and Glain quietly walk along the flanks of the cart as Valryc and Aleko lead the way. Aleko seems as if he wants to make idle conversation throughout their journey, but it seems he can’t find more to discuss than the nice weather they have been blessed with on their first day of the journey. “It must be a good omen for the rest of our journey. A sunny first day can only lead to good things further down the road. Thats what my father always said.” Valryc smiles and nods but silently continues on.

The sun raises high in the sky then fades into the west leaving the moon behind to light their way. As darkness deepens, Valryc is concerned that they won’t actually make it to Woodhaven before they cannot see the road ahead. He’s about to suggest that they find a place to camp off the road and maybe they’ll stop in Woodhaven for a midday meal the following day when finally in the distance the familiar shapes of houses and the torch lights of a village begin to form. “Ah it seems we’ve finally found our little haven. And I was certainly beginning to worry that we wouldn’t make it with our first day of travel. Indeed we have covered a great deal more distance than I had first thought.” Valryc comments. The group makes their way down the road finally approaching Woodhaven under the dim moonlight of their first long day.
