Alone in Deepfall Breach Wrap and Look Ahead!
With that, Alone in Deepfall Breach is a wrap! That was a really interesting structured solo adventure, I thoroughly enjoyed the mixture of prompts provided by the adventure and the need to generate some adventure points from scratch. It definitely provides great structure for newer solo players to learn how they might craft an adventure completely from scratch. Aleric lived to tell the tale, even through that final face off with the cultist's Chaos Demon! I definitely have plans to revist Aleric in the future, as I've planned to include him in a Forbidden Land solo game for quite some time. This time Aleric will end up being the grizzled old wolfkin and another new young adventurer will be the star of the show. But that is for farther into the future, lets chat about where Solo Rambling is rambling off to now...
Funnily enough, last time I wrote one of these wrap ups was about the same time last year! And so to continue the tradition, I'm planning to play through another Wretched and Alone journaling game for the Halloween season. This time I'll be jumping into Mountaintop Isolation. On top of that, I'm looking at playing something a bit less serious and scary for the month of October as well. I am hoping to also post up some sessions of a fun little solo game I picked up called Level 1 Skeleton. This game looks to be a fun short game that sticks on theme for the month of October, but much more tongue in cheek goofs and less psychological horror! Expect those sessions posting throughout October and maybe into November as I close out this year of Solo Rambling.
Looking ahead, I'm hoping to change some things up a bit with the blog. Over the last 2 years that I've been posting sessions, I have spent the majority of time playing in only two systems, Ironsworn and Dragonbane. While I really enjoyed getting to fully invest myself into those stories and systems, I'm hoping to start getting a more diverse portfolio of games played under my belt. Here's what that means for the blog going forward:
- I plan to play somewhat shorter campaigns. I don't want to commit to that too fully though. If I'm really enjoying a game I might dig in deep and keep a campaign going for a while. But outside of a game system really grabbing me or a story really keeping me wanting more, I'll likely stick to the shorter campaigns.
- The writing style will likely get adjusted somewhat. Though I really enjoy spending time writing out these play reports with as much detail as I can about the narrative, the conversations with NPCs, etc. this tends to lead to less time actually playing the games and more time narrating the play sessions. So in this regard, I'll likely be cutting down on the narrative detail for games a bit. There will definitely still be narrative and story, but I want to get more of the game being played into these posts. Again, I may revisit this if it ends up feeling too much like a soulless dice report than an actual story that I am excited to tell.
- I plan to start playing more games at the same time. This is something that I've been considering for a while, to have a bit more diversity of posts going out and also giving myself a chance to play what I feel like at the time and not feel stuck in telling 1 story through 1 system for such extended periods of time. I'm hoping this will also allow for me to get several posts queued up to increase the regularity of posts. Though that has been my plan for some time and I just never seem to get ahead enough to keep things rolling out consistently, so we'll see if having multiple games fixes that!
On that final point, here are the next few games I plan on jumping into after finishing up the October specials:
Runecairn Wardensaga: I'm jumping back into this one at first to get a bit more playtime with something familiar. I really enjoyed how quick the system was and want to try out generating a little point crawl adventure using the solo rules. This'll definitely stick to a 3 to 5 session max as I really want to get in more new games.
Notorious/Outsiders: This game feels like a really great break from the fantasy games that I've stuck with so far. A little sci-fi bounty hunter action! Plus this game leans into shorter campaigns so it fits right in with more games getting played! My current plan is to play through a single mission and if I really enjoy it I'll shift into the trilogy mode that is introduced in the Outsiders expansion. I'm expecting this to also land around 3 to 5 sessions
Five Leagues from the Borderlands/Five Parsecs from Home: I've been really itching to try out some solo wargaming, so I've decided now is the time to jump in! I still need to work out exactly how these sessions will be presented, as they will be mostly game mechanic posts and very little narrative added. Once I go through all the campaign set up, I'll hopefully have a good idea how I'd like to present these play reports. Likely this game will be a longer ongoing campaign in the background as I run through Runecairn and Notorious and cycle through other games. Expect this to be started up likely leading into the new year, as I'm still sorting out if I want to go with Fantasy (Leagues) or Scifi (Parsecs) and reading the rules for the systems.
Colostle: To round out the first group of simultaneous games, I wanted to have an ongoing journaling campaign that was not just a series of horror one shots. And so when I came across Colostle, I got excited to work this into my rotation. I've played a little bit of it on my own up to now and I'm excited to get a new campaign going that can get posted on the blog! As this is a journaling game, this will stick a bit closer to how Ironsworn and Dragonbane were presented in terms of narrative. Expect mechanics light and story forward for these posts!
So expect those games to start getting posted once I'm through the short Halloween season! Of course there are several games that I've had on my upcoming campaign section for quite some time now (if you're paying attention to that....) and so as Runecairn and Notorious get wrapped up I'll go ahead and let you know that Dolmenwood (via Gardens of Ynn) and Across 1000 Dead Worlds will be the next games taking those spots respectively!
With that, I think I've rambled on quite enough. I hope you're as excited for these changes as I am as we head into year 3 of Solo Rambling Roleplay!
Thanks for reading!
