Level 1 Skeleton: Session 1- Finally Awake
"Well, looks like you're finally coming around then eh!?" Rufus hears a hearty laugh from somewhere above him. As his senses returns he realizes he's looking up from the flat of his back. He must be in some kind of deep hole. About 6 feet deep at least, if he had to guess. An old looking knight stands over the hole as he chuckles at nothing. "Well At least you've got your gear there, even if you're missing the rest of you! Well, best get up and about it. The overlords need defeating if you're to save the world from the Great King!" The knight laughs, wandering off. Rufus glances about, recognizing that he is wearing a fine breastplate, with a longsword at his side. But he also realizes quickly that he is missing all else but his bones!
"Ah yes, that's right! I am Rufus and I am dead! Or... Well I suppose I was dead. Hmm... What did that old fool just say? Something about saving the world? Overlords? Huh." Rufus stands from his grave, clambering up over the lip after collecting his gear from his coffin. Well I suppose I better be about it then! Sounds like the world is in need of a hero, and I, the newly awakened skeleton will be the one to do the heroing!?"
Rufus looks around, recognizing that he'll need to get out of this graveyard first. A thick fog hangs low to the ground swirling as Rufus begins making his way through the grounds. As he rounds the corner he finds....
GM Note:
The game focuses on challenges, each having a DC and HP. A dice pool is
created by rolling a D20, an Approach die, A skill die (if applicable), an
item die (always a D6, and only if applicable), and an Artifact if you have
any. You narrate what your skeleton is trying to do, and then create your
dice pool. Roll your dice and choose 2 to add together. If you roll under
the challenge DC, you lose 1 bone. You always reduce the challenge's HP by
the die pool's total.
Once the challenge is overcome, you collect your rewards (XP and Items). If you are reduced to 0 bones you lose xp, reset the progress of the dungeon, and find yourself back in town.
The Graveyard
Challenge 1: A Swarm of large bone eating worms burst from the ground as they
realize that a meal is out and about the graveyard!
DC: 14 HP: 60
Rufus daringly leaps into the fray! He hops up on the tombstone next to him,
leaping dexterously from one tombstone to the next to better position himself
for the fight.
Dice Pool -> D20+Daring(D8)+Parkour(D8)
Result -> 15; Success Challenge HP: 45/60
From his new vantage point, Rufus makes use of his thickly gloved skeletal
hands, as to avoid the unfortunate munching on said hands by said bone eating
worms. He punches and mashes his fists down, hoping to thin the swarms
numbers!
Dice Pool -> D20+Daring(D8)+Thick Gloves(D6)
Result -> 24; Success Challenge HP: 21/60
Finally, having cleared the area around his tombstone perch of the worms,
Rufus leaps down to finish off the last few wrigglers face to face. He
unsheathes his longsword and begins hacking and slashing at the worms that
remain!
Dice Pool ->
D20+Daring(D8)+Parkour(D8)+Longsword(D6)
Result -> 23; Success! Challenge HP: 0/60
Challenge rewards -> +2 Marrow; Item roll -> 22; A jar of oil
Rufus hacks and slashes and hacks again at the wriggling bone eaters. He hacks and hacks until he's sure they are all wriggling no further! "Ah yes, my first victory! And a job well done at that. Very good old chap, very good indeed!" Rufus glances around the graveyard and sees a jar of what appears to be lantern oil resting outside a large mausoleum. "And a reward for my victory! I'm sure you don't mind a bit of payment for my job well done!" Rufus laughs in a clacking, xylophonic sort of manner, being a skeleton and all... He quickly collects his reward and dashes towards the graveyard gates!
Rufus follows the road out of the graveyard, cresting the final hill as the town below finally comes into view. "Ah yes! My most favorite town! After all, why would I be buried overlooking said town if it weren't my favorite!? Yes, yes, the town of... well. Yes the town of. Hold a minute, its coming to me." Rufus stands and thinks for a long many hours. So long in fact that night turns to a dewy dawn. As the sun crests over the hills and glistens upon the town, finally Rufus exclaims. "Ah yes! Midland! The town where... Uh. Did my mother live here? Was I born here? Oh who cares, it'll come back to me sooner or later. And now, onward to the town of Midland!"
Yes indeed, the town of midland. Rufus remembers it all too well. The people are accepting of him as he shambles into the town center. Not a one person bats an eye at the breastplate-clad skeleton as he walks amongst the people starting their days off. "That's right! So long as you've got loot to share and a good heart... (Uh well metaphorically, seeing as I have not the real heart left anymore. But its the spirit that counts!) Then the people of midland care not if you are man, woman, child or skeleton! There is a place for you here. And now off on my quest to save the world! Surely there is a board in the town square that will provide details of said overlords who are in need of said defeating!"
And just as surprisingly, Rufus does find a board detailing the who's, the where's, and the why's of these dastardly overlords. Pulling down the posters and bunching them up, he shoves the parchment into his pack and with no further ado, dashes out of town and down the road towards his first overlordly challenge!
And just like that, the fledgling skeleton hero Rufus is off to the races. Having made his way from the graveyard, dashing into town to collect his quests, we'll catch him next time as he sets out to defeat the Overlords and the Great King that threaten... Well something I guess, its very unclear what Rufus thinks he is doing, but I'll be damned he needs to do it!
