Level 1 Skeleton: Session 4- The Forlorn Knight

Grim-Caller the Forlorn Knight

After his quick pit stop to town, Rufus is back on the road out to the next overlord. "I mean who knows how long I was dead for! I got plenty of rest then, and I have to save the world after all!" This time making sure to check the pamphlet for the location of the next dungeon before he gets too far in the wrong direction. "Grim-Caller the Forlorn Knight, huh? Geez, sounds like I'll be doin' him a favor putting him down for his own good! And were off to the serpent's sepulcher.... Hmmm I mean I still don't think I really know what a sepulcher is but it seems spooky enough!" With that Rufus makes his way to the dungeon of the third overlord. One step closer to his goal of saving the world!

Serpent's Sepulcher: Challenge 1

Challenge 1: As soon as he enters the sepulcher, hordes of undead snakes begin dropping down from the ceiling!
DC: 12 HP: 60

Rufus quickly dons his thick gloves and begins moving the snakes out of his way by the handful! The number of snakes is far too many for his sword to handle, so he'll have to approach this carefully!
Dice Pool -> D20+Careful(D6)+theivery(D4)+Gloves(D6)
Result -> 14; Success Challenge HP: 46/60

Rufus successfully clears a path from the door, but the snakes are still too numerous. "I've got to put a bit more brain power into this!" He thinks to himself as he thumps his fist on his empty skull. A loose coin rattles around before popping out of his empty eye socket. With a nervous laugh, Rufus pulls out his mirror and newly acquired gem of light. He shines the gem onto the mirror to make a dazzling display in hopes of scaring away the undead snakes!
Dice Pool -> D20+Clever(D4x2)+Hand Mirror(D6)+Gem of Light(D6)
Result -> 13; Success Challenge HP: 33/60

With the snakes reeling away from the sudden bright light, Rufus takes the opportunity to leap over the confused snakes towards the exit!
Dice Pool -> D20+Daring(D8)+Parkour(D8)
Result -> 9; Failure Challenge HP: 24/60 Bones: 6/7

The snakes overwhelm Rufus as he is unable to clear the last clump of wriggling undead snakes! They begin biting and gnawing on his bones, chipping away bits of his arms and legs! He turns to his last resort, drawing his sword and attempting to slash and hack his way through the snakes so he can escape into the next room!
Dice Pool -> D20+Daring(D8)+Fighting(D6x2)+Sword of Many Cuts(D8)
Result -> 24; Success the Room full of undead snakes has been defeated!

End of Challenge 1: Rufus gains +2 Marrow(2) and finds an Item!
Item roll -> 96; A Mortar and pestle

Rufus stumbles over the bodies of the slain snakes, rushing through the open doorway. Quickly he turns and slams the door behind him to stop the hordes of snakes from pursuing him further. Taking stock of where he finds himself, he realizes that he's stumbled into the kitchen! "I suppose even in a Sepulcher people still have to eat huh?" He chuckles to himself as he finds a pristine mortar and pestle sitting on the counter. He quickly smuggles it into his pack before carrying on

Serpent's Sepulcher: Challenge 2

Challenge 2: Falling stalactites from the ceiling begin pelting Rufus as he makes his way through the sepulcher!
DC: 12 HP: 60

In a defensive maneuver that Rufus has at this point perfected, he quickly withdraws his arms and head and legs into his breastplate. Leaving enough foot exposed to leap and jump acrobatically through the room, Rufus begins pushing through the harrowing hallway of falling stalactites!
Dice Pool -> D20+Careful(D6)+Parkour(D8)+Breastplate(D6)
Result -> 17; Success Challenge HP: 43/60

Having flung himself like a breastplated missile, Rufus reaches the wall of the hallway. The ceiling here has much less stalactit-ing, and so he uses his thick gloves to protect his fingers as he climbs along the wall, hoping to stay out of the way of the falling rock!
Dice Pool -> D20+Clever(D4)+Parkour(D8)+Gloves(D6)
Result -> 17; Success Challenge HP: 26/60

Nearing the exit of the hallway, Rufus tries to propel himself off the wall and towards the exit, hoping to tuck and roll with a flourish to send him through to the other side!
Dice Pool -> D20+Daring(D8)+Parkour(D8)
Result -> 9; Failure Challenge HP: 17/60 Bones 5/7

His leap falls short! As it does so, almost as if aimed directly for him, a handful of falling stalactites hit right on Rufus' boney skull. "Oh, those chips sure are adding up! If I stay in here much longer I'll be stalactite bone dust!" With his daring idea a failure, Rufus falls back to the safe route. Tucking into his breastplate he attempts to navigate the hallway carefully protecting his precious bones!
Dice Pool -> D20+Careful(D6)+Parkour(D8)+Breastplate(D6)
Result -> 12; Success Challenge HP: 5/60

The rocks keep falling and keep blocking Rufus' progress. He's nearly through, but if he doesn't act quickly he's going to end up bone paste! In a final daring effort, Rufus springs from his breastplate protected position and attempts to leap through the open doorway once more!
Dice Pool -> D20+Daring(D8)+Parkour(D8)
Result -> 13; Success The falling Stalactite hallway is defeated!

End of Challenge 2: Rufus gains +2 Marrow(4) and finds an Item!
Item roll -> 31; Modelling clay

After taking stock of the room he finds himself in, Rufus recognizes that he's found... a craft room? "I suppose one must have hobbies in a Sepulcher as well... Ah! That will do splendidly to patch me up!" Rufus spots some loose modelling clay! He quickly sets about to patch up the chips his bones received from the falling stalactites. Not one to care too much about his appearance, the skeletal knight is covered in modelling clay like a patchwork stuffed animal. Just with more bones and less stuffing... He shoves the remainder of the modelling clay in his pack and presses on!

Serpent's Sepulcher: Challenge 3

In the next room, Rufus comes face to face with an all to familiar sight to him now! "Ah excellent! A portal! I can make my way back to town and take a quick breather before pressing on!" Rufus nervously laughs, taking out his hand mirror and seeing how ridiculous he looks with all this modelling clay covering his cracks and chips. "I suppose I'll just take a moment to pull this all off before I pay them a visit" He is unable to remove all the clay. He goes through the portal looking slightly like a fool, thinking modelling clay would do anything to patch up his chipped bones!

While in town Rufus does the following things:

  1. Rest: Reset his bones to 7/7

With his chips and cracks all taken care of from a quick rest, Rufus makes his way back through the portal and on to the next challenge!

Serpent's Sepulcher: Challenge 4

Challenge 4: A troop of lizard warriors decked out in bone armor and bone weapons look eagerly at Rufus, hoping to expand their bone collection!
DC: 10 HP: 80

Rufus wanders out of the portal and deeper into the Sepulcher. There he finds a troop of lizard warriors armored in the most horrendous sight! He lets out a gasp as the lizards greedily eye him up. "Look friends, certainly you wouldn't want me! I'm all... Well bone yes, but I'm talking! You wouldn't snuff out the life from such marvelous bones! Maybe you could just wait till I'm done using these things?" Rufus sheepishly asks, holding out his trust sack of bribing coins.
Dice Pool -> D20+Clever(D4)+Talking(D4)+Sack of Coins(D6)
Result -> 18; Success Challenge HP: 62/80

As he holds out his sack of coins to the lizards, Rufus' breath is taken away! It seems like the group is actually considering his offer. They huddle into a circle to discuss the trade. Not wanting to wait around to see if they actually go for it, Rufus decides to take matters into his own hands! He implements his new technique, the magical gem of light and mirror flashbang! "Sorry friends, but I've got things to do! I'll be going now!"
Dice Pool -> D20+Clever(D4x2)+Thievery(D4)+Mirror(D6)+Gem of Light(D6)
Result -> 18; Success Challenge HP: 44/80

The lizards begin reeling from the sudden flash of light as Rufus expertly shines the mirror towards their eyes! With the warriors bewildered and confused, rufus makes a mad dash for the exit, leaping swiftly over barrels and other such items the lizards have collected here
Dice Pool -> D20+Daring(D8)+Parkour(D8)
Result -> 24; Success Challenge HP: 20/80

Seeming to have lost them in his mad dash for the exit, Rufus quickly spots a place to hide away from his pursuers! He tucks himself into a small alcove and waits for the lizards to rush by!
Dice Pool -> D20+Sublte(D4)+Thievery(D4)
Result -> 13; Success Challenge HP: 7/80

The lizard warriors all rush past him. And thankfully they do! Rufus recognizes another exit from the room. It looks grander and much more sepulchery. "That must be where the overlord is! Its now or never, Lets go!" He darts from his hideaway and makes for the door leading to the overlords chambers!
Dice Pool -> D20+Daring(D8)+Parkour(D8)
Result -> 11; Success the lizard warriors have been defeated!

End of Challenge 4: Rufus gains +2 Marrow(6) and finds an Item!
Item roll -> 36; Jar of Pickles

As he is running for the door, a familiar sweet and sour smell overwhelms Rufus. "PICKLES! AH I LOVE PICKLES" A memory from his former life, where he was actually alive! The pickles are too good to pass up. He makes a detour on his way from the lizard warrior's chambers and grabs the jar and shoves it into his pack before exiting into the overlord's chambers.

Grim-Caller! I've come to make a Grim Call. But it won't be grim for me! HAHAHA." Rufus yells out his challenge, a witty one he's been thinking up with all this running he's been doing so far. He laughs heartily at his own joke. In front of him, a knight sits gloomily on a large throne within the chamber. With a heavy sigh, Rufus hears his response. "Oh boy. That's an original one. Haven't heard that before." Another sigh as the figure stands. "Look we know what you've come for, just drop the jokes and lets get on with it. I've got some forlorning to be about."

Rufus staggers under the rather grim and forlorn response from the overlord. "Well maybe... Uh haha. Sorry lets start over. Look I'm here to kill you and save the world. But it seems like maybe you don't want to be doing this line of work?" He pulls out his trusty sack of coins and offers them to the forlorn knight. "Just take this and get out of here. Make a life for yourself!"

Serpent' Sepulcher: Grim-Caller the Forlorn Knight

DC: 14 HP: 60
Overlord Power Master Tactician -> Rufus cannot include the same skill or approach in consecutive rolls against the Forlorn Knight.

The knight eyes Rufus and the offered sack of coins. Rufus almost thinks this time it might actually work!
Dice Pool -> D20+Clever(D4)+Talking(D4)+Sack of Coins(D6)
Result -> 23; Success Overlord HP: 37/60

The overlord responds, "You make a mighty offer... I know that you must defeat me. And so I cannot accept. This fight will be had regardless, so lets just be done with it!" Rufus grimaces, but accepts the overlords response. With a flash, he's drawn his sword and charges at the Forlorn Knight. "Then I'll try to make this easy on you. This will be it!"
Dice Pool -> D20+Daring(D8)+Fighting(D6x2)+Sword of Many Cuts(D8)
Result -> 15; Success Overlord HP: 22/60

Rufus strikes a mighty blow against the knight, though the overlord quickly makes a counter strike and drives Rufus back. "You still have a chance! Take the coins and be gone! I can defeat the great king without utterly destroying you!" The forlorn knight listens, but his shoulders slump with the second offering of a way out.
Dice Pool -> D20+Clever(D4)+Talking(D4)+Sack of Coins(D6)
Result -> 11; Failure Overlord HP:11/60 Bones: 6/7

"You heard me the first time didn't you!? Stop this talk and let this fight be done with. Only you or I shall be walking out of here alive! Or I guess if you walk out you'll still be bones... But. YOU GET WHAT I MEAN. WE. ARE. FIGHTING!" The yell from the overlord gets Rufus down. He is emotionally damaged from the Overlords sad situation! He grips his sword and charges forward again. "Fine then! Have it your way. I've offered twice, so this time I'll finish you!'
Dice Pool -> D20+Daring(D8)+Fighting(D6x2)+Sword of Many Cuts(D8)
Result -> 21; Grim-Caller the Forlorn Knight is defeated!

End of Overlord Rewards: Rufus gains +4 Marrow(10) and finds an Item and an Artifact!
Item roll -> 89; Jar of Paint
Artifact roll -> 9; Belt of Might (D8)! When this artifact is included in a dice pool, double the result of the Parkour roll!

The forlorn knight falls to Rufus' mighty blows. After collecting his rewards from amongst the overlords collection of items, Rufus makes his way back to town. A solemn air hangs over the usually carefree and joyous skeleton. But only for a moment! "I cannot let the curse of the Forlorn Knight rest upon me too! I will defeat the final overlord, and take vengeance on the Great King who would put someone in such sad shape in such a tough position! Hahaha Oh the irony that now my journey is also to avenge one who I had to defeat!" Rufus jumps for joy at the sudden turn in his quests purpose. He makes it to town and rests before the final overlord and finally his shot at defeating the Great King and saving the world!!

While in town he does the following things:

  1. Sells Loot: Rufus sells the following Items: Jar of Pickles, Jar of Paint, Modelling Clay, and Mortar & Pestle +1 Marrow(11)
  2. Level up: Rufus will level up twice! He spends 4 marrow(7) to increase his talking from D4 to D6. He spends 4 marrow(3) to increase his clever from D4 to D6. Rufus is now Level 8
  3. Rest: Reset his bones to 7/7

A slight turn at the end there, Rufus is now challenged with complex emotions that a skeleton usually has no place dealing with! With a sad end to the Forlorn Knight, Rufus takes on additional baggage, promising to defeat the Great king for not only the world but also the sad knight that was charged as one of his overlords. And with that there is only one remaining overlord left standing between Rufus and the Great King!
