Colostle Character Creation
Calling
The first steps to creating a character for Colostle is to define your characters calling; your character's call to adventure. This defines your external reason for exploring the land of Colostle. It could be as simple as wanting to discover what is beyond the walls of your village, searching for someone, or as complex as a divine prophecy pushing your character to adventure. There is a quick table that you can use to find a random calling, though I think instead of randomly selecting a calling, I'm going to choose one.
My Calling
There is an army sweeping through the lands around your village. You have heard tales of their unstoppable nature; burning villages in their wake, their men clad in monstrous, spiked black armour.
One night they arrive at your village; it is chaos, people screaming, running for their lives, the roofs of your people’s huts are set ablaze, lighting up the night sky. But most terrifying of all... Rooks, following their general’s commands, their eyes burning with a purple flame. No one has ever commanded a living Rook before - how is this possible? You survive. Maybe they left you for dead, maybe they decided you would spread the fear to the surrounding lands ahead of their coming. But there is one thing for certain. No one else made it out of the assault... To stop this from happening to anyone else's village, you will need to get to the bottom of the mystery of the Black Army and the Rooks of Purple Flame.
As the sole survivor of the attack on my village, I swear to uncover the secrets to the Rooks of Purple Flame and stop whatever magics the general of the Black Army is using to control them.
Nature
Next step is to define your character's nature. This is going to be the driving force to how your character handles situations and people that they come across in their explorations. As the player, this will be the roleplay factor that will drive the story forward. Again, this can be randomized on a table but I am going to go ahead and make my own for this character
My Nature
My character is hot-headed and quick to act. Their impatience causes them to move forward without thinking through all the possibilities, getting them in trouble more often than not. Though they might be quick to anger, they are also quick to recognize a mistake and apologize. They have no time to hold grudges if there is a genuine apology made. They are driven by the need to stop what happened to their village from happening to anyone else.
Class
Next up is your character's class. This defines how they are able to interact with the world of Colostle in the two modes of play, exploration and combat. Each class is given a different score for those to respective traits. These scores define how many cards are drawn for each turn while in those modes of play. The character classes also give some backstory to your character and expand on the roleplay of how your character navigates the world of Colostle.
My Class
After thinking through my Calling and Nature, I have decided that I'm going to play a character of The Armed Class. The armed have the literal arm of a Rook connected to them through some kind of ritual, attuning it to the character's intentions. They are warriors who have a strong constitution, having undergone the strenuous demands of the rituals required to attune a piece of the rook technology.
I like this choice for my character for multiple reasons. First off, I imagine this will be a rather heavy combat experience. My character is a fighter on a path to defeat the devestating tool of a rampaging army. They are going to need to have a tussle or two! Secondly, I think there will be something interesting to play around with between the connection of my character and their rook arm juxtaposed with the strange Rooks of the Purple Flame and whoever is controlling them. Will lead to some interesting roleplay ahead!
And so my character started off as a city guard, given their ability to wield the Rook Arm. They have a large rook arm protruding from their back that wields a hefty greatsword. With their two hands free during a fight, they are able to protect themselves with a sturdy shield, creating a devestating offense and a impenetrable defense.
Stats
The Armed class have the following scores:
Exploration Score: 3
Combat Score: 4
They are pretty well balanced overall, leaning slightly more into combat while still being capable of exploration.
Weapon
The final piece of the puzzle for character creation is their weapon. This can be anything that you can imagine as this has nothing to do with any game mechanics. This is purely a flavor choice used for roleplaying out the combats.
My Weapon
As stated previously, my character will wield a sturdy shield while their Rook arm wields a massive greatsword!
Final Touches
Last touches to flesh out the character, lets give them a name and a description before we jump into the adventure!
Name: Jaiyana Stonewall
Looks: Jaiyana is a female with a sturdy, muscular build.
Standing at a taller than average height for women of her village, she is lean
and strong. She has short cropped mousey brown hair and bronze tanned skin.
Backstory: Jaiyana was orphaned as a young child and brought
up by a senior member of the village council. She was always bigger and
tougher than the other children her age, quick to fight but quick to offer a
hand up to her opponents. When she was of age, there was no question that she
would join the ranks of The Armed Wall, the villages Rook-Armed guard
regiment. She quickly adopted the greatsword in her Rook arm and defending her
body with a massive shield. She quickly developed the nickname "Stonewall" as
the combination of defense and offense in her fighting style made it hard for
sparring partners to beat her defense without loosing the match. She quickly
adopted the monicker and became "Jaiyana Stonewall." As the sole survivor of
the attack of the Black Army and the Rooks of Purple Flame, she has made it
her mission to discover the secrets of the magically controlled rooks that
destroyed her village and stop the same thing from happening elsewhere, or die
trying.
And with that, we'll start in on The Saga of Jaiyana Stonewall!
