Sword World: Quickstart Adventure 1- My First Adventure!
My First Adventure!
This adventure is a solo adventure from the Sword World quickstart. I'll be chronicling my playthrough as I dip my toe into the game and see how it stands up to solo play!
Located in the heart off the port city of Harves, the Blue Nose is an adventurers' guild branch with a reputation for being hospitable to novice adventurers. Garen finds himself with limited options, tries his luck with the Blue Nose At the reception counter, an older man approaches Garen. He is clad in formal clothing and has spectacles that lend and air of intelligence to his distinguished features.
"Ah, good lad! Are you new around the Blue Nose? I am the branch manager of this Guild. The name is Rosso. Nice to meet you. New adventurers are always welcome here. To become a true adventurer, one needs courage, wisdom, and a few useful skills! Oh, and a bit of coint helps to equip yourself too... But from the looks of it, you're well suited for a good fight! Here, lets get you registered and ready for your first job!"
Garen is a human fighter who is looking to register as a new adventurer to earn some coin and gain some reputation in the local area. He is happy to run into Rosso and quickly submits his information on the form that Rosso hands over to him.
Rosso takes the form, looking it over to make sure it is filled out correctly. After a brief scan, he glances up with a wide grin to Garen. "Well it appears that all is in order! Now, lets talk about work. Right now we have an urgent but simple request that will be perfect for a new adventurer such as yourself. Recently, goblins have attacked a nearby village. All the villagers worked together to fend them off, but one of them has escaped. If left alone, the remaining goblin will soon gather their friends to attack the village again! We must prevent this. The goblin fled to a nearby cave, probably recovering from his wounds before he sets off to recruit a proper raiding party. The villagers can't pursue the goblin... This is where you come in!"
What do you know about the Barbarous Goblins?
Monster Knowledge Check (Knowledge/sage): TN 5 (2d6+0)->
6; Success!
Garen thinks for a moment, trying to recall what he has heard of goblins. He remembers that Goblins are susceptible to magical damage, which doesn't help him at all. They are known to be bullies when they feel confident, but will beg for their lives when outnumbered. Goblins are short, have green skin, and very distinctive features in long pointed ears and snub-like noses. Also they have quite sharp nasty teeth!
Rosso continues as Garen ponders what he recalls about goblins. "Goblins are not to be underestimated, but you seem strong enough to hunt down the one goblin that escaped. Here, this is a map to the cave the villagers suspect the goblin retreated to. As long as you don't get caught by surprise in the dark, you shouldn't have any problems dealing with this. If you're successful, I'll pay you a contingency fee of 200 Gumells!"
Garen quickly accepts the offer, secures supplies for the journey and sets off to deal with this lone goblin survivor before he becomes a problem!
To the Cave!
The damp air caresses Garen's face as he peeks into the gloom. The cave is dimly lit, but Garen thinks a torch would certainly help with the exploration.
Garen lights his torch and sets off into the depths of the cave. He knows that Goblins can see in the darkest of light, and so having the torch will only benefit him in the long run. "Best to see whats coming before it's on me!" He thinks to himself.
The cave appears to be natural, and it progresses at a slight curve making it impossible to see all the way into the back. Shadows flicker in Garen's torchlight. It would be easy for a goblin to go unnoticed in a place like this if you didn't know it was here...
Garen listens for any sounds that might betray the goblins presence.
Listen Check (observation/scout, ranger): TN 8 -> (2d6+3)
9; Success
As Garen listens at the mouth of the cave, he hears the sound of something eating coming from around the bend. It could be the goblin! He advances forward, hoping to catch the goblin by surprise.
Stealth Check (Movement/Scout, Ranger): TN 9 -> (2d6+3) 12; Success!
Garen silently moves through the entrance of the cave and deeper towards the
sound he hears. As he rounds the corner, he spots the goblin in the middle of
devouring some questionable looking meat! Its deeply focused on eating and
notices Garen too late, as Garen springs forward to attack!
Garen gets a +4 on initiative for surprising the goblin.

Garen with its club

End Combat!
Garen wipes his blade clean before sheathing it and looking over the goblin's meager possessions for anything that might be of value.
Loot Check -> 10; High Quality Weapon (150 G)
Garen rummages through the goblin's possessions, extracting a finely crafted silver dagger. "Well then, I suppose the old scamp didn't realize what he had now did he? The experience was worth getting my foot in the door with the Blue Nose, but this will certainly help fill my coin purse!"
As Garen exits the cave, a voice calls out to him. "Ahh, it seems you've handled yourself alright then! Is the goblin dead? Rosso asked us to check in on you because he was worried about you travelling alone. But it seems his worry was for naught!"
A tall elven man stands at the cave entrance, robed in clerical vestiges of Tidan. Behind him a small tabbit with a sturdy staff and a lykant with hand wraps and traditional marital artist attire stand looking over his shoulder, surprised that Garen has exited the cave with hardly a scratch. The elven cleric motions to his friends, "If you'd like, we have another job that might be of interest to you. After you've had a chance to rest, you're more then welcome to accompany us on our travels!"
Garen smiles and nods to the new comers. "It would be a pleasure! But first I'd like to stop into the guild and collect my reward for this job. If that is alright, I'd gladly join you!"
The party departs, returning to Harves. On his return, Rosso congratulates Garen on a successful first mission! He is paid 200 Gumell for dealing with the surviving goblin. He finds a vendor and sells the finely wrought dagger for 150 Gumells. After a meal and nights rest, Garen and his new group ready to set off on the next adventure!
